Dial *#06#
Type *#06# into the keypad as though you were making a call. It answers immediately. If an EID — a long number, usually 32 digits — appears next to the IMEI, the phone has eSIM hardware.

On an iPhone
Settings → Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions) → Add eSIM. If that option is there, the phone is eSIM ready.

On Android
Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → +. The wording moves around by brand; look for “Add eSIM” or “Download a SIM instead”.

Then check the lock
Hardware is only half of it. A phone locked to one operator may refuse a travel eSIM even though the eSIM slot works — your carrier can tell you, and can usually unlock it.

What eSIM support actually needs

Two things have to be true before a travel eSIM will work on your phone, and they are independent of each other. The first is hardware: the handset needs an embedded SIM chip and firmware that can download a profile onto it. Most flagship phones released since 2018 have one, mid-range models followed a few years later, and a good number of budget handsets still do not. The second is that the phone must be free to accept a profile from an operator other than the one that sold it.

The check that settles it: *#06#

Open the dialler and type *#06# as though you were placing a call. Every phone answers this code, offline, without an app. You will see the IMEI, and on an eSIM-capable handset you will also see an EID — a long identifier, usually 32 digits, that belongs to the embedded SIM itself. An EID means the chip is there. No EID means the phone is showing you only its physical-SIM identity, and the settings path is worth trying before you conclude anything:

iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Add eSIM.
Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → +, then look for “Add eSIM” or “Download a SIM instead”.

Why a carrier lock can block a working eSIM

This is the failure nobody warns travellers about. A subsidised or contract handset is often locked to the operator that sold it, and the lock applies to profiles as well as to plastic SIMs. The eSIM downloads, the phone stores it, and the profile refuses to activate — hardware that passed every check, blocked by policy rather than by silicon. Ask your carrier whether the phone is unlocked before you leave, not at the airport. Unlocking is usually free once the contract terms are met, and it can take a day or two to take effect.

If your model is not in our list

Read the gap as a gap. Every device in our catalogue is one we have confirmed supports eSIM — there is no entry anywhere in it that says a phone cannot. So a model we have not listed is a model we have no record of, which is a statement about our coverage and not about your handset. We add devices continuously and always lag new releases by a few weeks, and regional variants of the same phone often carry different names. Run *#06# on the handset. That answer is definitive, it is current, and it beats any list including ours.

Questions people ask

How do I tell if my phone has an eSIM?

Dial *#06# on the keypad. If an EID appears alongside the IMEI, the phone has an embedded SIM. You can also look for the option to add one: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM on an iPhone, or Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → + on Android. If the option exists, so does the hardware.

Can my phone hold two eSIMs at once?

Most eSIM phones can store several profiles and switch between them, and recent iPhones can keep two active at the same time — your home number for calls and texts, a travel plan for data. Older and mid-range Android handsets often store multiple profiles but only allow one to be active. Settings will show you the list, and switching takes a few taps.

Can a carrier-locked phone use a travel eSIM?

Often not. A lock stops the handset accepting a profile from another operator, and it applies to eSIMs just as it does to physical SIMs — the eSIM may download and then refuse to activate. The hardware is fine; the policy is not. Ask your carrier to unlock the phone before you travel, and allow a day or two for it to take effect.

Do eSIMs work on smartwatches and tablets?

Many cellular smartwatches and tablets have an eSIM, and our list covers tablets as well as phones. Watches are the awkward case: a cellular watch is usually tied to a plan from your home carrier rather than able to load an arbitrary travel profile, so a travel eSIM generally belongs on the phone. Tablets behave much like phones, and a data-only travel plan suits them well.

My phone is not on your list — does that mean it has no eSIM?

No. Every device we list is one we have confirmed supports eSIM, so there are no entries saying a phone does not; a model that is absent is one we have not recorded yet. New releases and regional variants take us a while to catch. Run *#06# on the handset and look for an EID — that answer is current and definitive.
